What is a Studienkolleg?
A Studienkolleg is a preparatory course for international applicants whose secondary school certificate is not recognized as equivalent to the German university entrance qualification. It prepares you for university study in your subject area and usually lasts two semesters.
Who needs a Studienkolleg?
Whether you need one depends on your school certificate, your country and sometimes previous university study. Some applicants can go directly to university, for example after completing part of a degree in their home country.
The anabin database and the DAAD's admission information show how qualifications from many countries are assessed. The university you apply to makes the final decision.
Course types
Courses focus on the subjects you plan to study. Common course types include:
- T course — technical, mathematical and natural science subjects
- M course — medical, biological and pharmaceutical subjects
- W course — economics, business and social sciences
- G course — humanities and German studies
- S course — languages
The assessment exam (Feststellungsprüfung)
The course ends with the Feststellungsprüfung. Passing it gives you access to university programs in the subject area of your course.
Admission and language requirements
To join a Studienkolleg you usually need to apply through a university or the Studienkolleg itself and pass an entrance exam, which typically tests German and often mathematics. Teaching is in German, so good German skills are essential.
Public Studienkollegs generally do not charge tuition, although a semester contribution applies. Private providers charge fees.
